From: Engr. Shafiq Bhuiyan ToSent: Saturday, August 11, 2007 4:35 AM Subject: [khabor.com] From where Golam Azam has got huge amount of money to built a multi million taka project in Dhaka during last Jamaat- BNP era To all Jamat - Razakar leaders - workers - supporters, I have a question to all of you. Would you please inform us on the basis of fact & documents - how your ex leader/AMEER Golam Azam, who was a mere lecturer of a college, in a remote MOFOSSOL area for few years in fifties, has recently built a seven or eight story house at Quaji Goli, Maghbazar, Dhaka? From where he got these huge amount of moneys to built such a multi million taka project? Please do not by pass my question by KOTHAR MAIR PECH DIE , give the straight forward. appropriate and correct reply with facts and documents. "Sustha thakon, nirapade thakon ebong valo thakon" Shuvechhante, Shafiqur Rahman Bhuiyan (ANU) NEW ZEALAND. Salman Al-Azami wrote: Dear Mr ANU I certainly understand the motive of your query. You are one of those people who have nothing else to do but find faults on others, particularly those whom you do not like. If you are so eager to find out the 'mystery' of Professor Ghulam Azam's financial ability to build a house in Dhaka, you may well leave new Zealand now and join the Anti Corruption Commission in Bangladesh and enquire about the funds. You said you wanted facts and documents. Who are you to demand such proof? Who has given you the authority to make such claim? In normal circumstances, I would not have replied to your mail. But knowing that you have sent this mail to one of the most widely read e-mail groups who generally share topics related to Islam, current and international affairs with intellectual inputs, I preferred to write this for the consumption of those who accept logic. As far as you are concerned Mr. ANU, the way you framed this query proves that nothing will convince you, and it does not bother me whether you are convinced or not. You are very right. My father, Professor Ghulam Azam hardly has any money that can afford an eight-story building. He inherited the land from my grandfather, like my other uncles who built houses adjacent to ours. We lived in a tin-shed building until 1996, the large part of which was the original one when my grandfather bought this property in early 50s. In 1995, my eledest brother, who works in Islamic Development Bank Jeddah convinced my father to build a house with loan from Islamic Bank so that my parents can spend their old days in a bit of comfort. My father called the Secretary of Sharia Council of Islamic Bank Bangladesh Limited to tell him how the building loan of Islamic Bank works. After being convinced that it complies with Sharia Law, my father agreed to apply to Islamic Bank for loan. The bank agreed to give 80% loan and the remaining 20% had to be paid by us. Naturally, my father had no money to pay. But he has six sons with five of them earning abroad at that time (including my brother in the Army who was then in Russian Georgia in a UN mission). Some of the brothers paid themselves and some others like myself managed the money through loan from close relatives. My brother in IDB paid the bulk of the down payment. This is how we were able to get the loan sanctioned. The building has 21 flats, of which 18 are rented. We repay the bank loan from the rent we get. By Allah's mercy, we have been successfully paying the bank loan right from the first instalment. For Mr ANU's information, the building was constructed well before BNP-Jamaat Allaince came into power. From getting the planning permission to constructing the building, everything was done during the rule of Awami League. For DAHUK members, this is the story of Prof. Ghulam Azam's building in Moghbazar. And for Mr. ANU, please use your inquisitiveness into more constructive matters. As far as documents are concerned, you have no right to ask such documents. I feel sorry for you that no one in the caretaker government or Anti Corruption Commission is so 'curious' as you are. But every document is there for any authorised entity to check or inquire. I thank the readers for taking patience in reading this. May Allah forgive us for all bad intentions and deeds and enable us to do good deeds and use our thoughts and minds in the right direction - Ameen Regards, Dr. Salman Al-Azami Youngest son of Professor Ghulam Azam London, UK Numan Azmi wrote: Dear Readers Assalamualaikum. My name is Numan Azmi. I am the 5th son of Prof. Ghulam Azam, currently living in Manchester, England. I echo what my younger brother wrote in response to the vindictive remarks made by Mr. Shafiqur Rahman Bhuiyan (ANU) from New Zealand. In addition, I would like to add few more comments. I wonder how long Mr. Bhuiyan has been away from Bangladesh as, if he was aware of the development of Islamic finance in Bangladesh, he would have known about the house building loan programme of Islami Bank Bangladesh. To my knowledge, hundreds of people took advantage of this programme and built their house in an Islamic Shariah compliant method. I am afraid the manner and the language in which Mr. Bhuiyan asked his question does not demonstrate sincerity in his approach. If he was really asking an honest question, he would not have used spiteful and insulting approach addressing a man who is regarded as one of the most respected and honoured Islamic leader in the world. Mr. Bhuiyan addresses his questions to, amongst others, ''Razakar leaders''. As far as I understand, there are no Razakar leaders in Bangladesh at the moment. Razakar was a group which existed in 1971. After 36 years, bringing this issue back clearly demonstrate the nature of Mr. Bhuiyan's intention and the hatred he has towards my father. As my father is a political leader, it is natural that others would oppose his political ideology. But to attack an internationally renowned person in this manner only exposes the narrow mentality and the mean minded attitude of Mr. Bhuiyan. Although my brother Dr. Salman has addressed the question of facts and figures raised by Mr. Bhuiyan about our building in Dhaka, I agree with Salman that, this may not satisfy the likes of Mr. Bhuiyan, who has nothing better to do than try to undermine a person who is a pride for his country. I would like to remind Mr. Bhuiyan some other historical facts, which he may not be aware of : 1. Prof. Azam was the elected General Secretary of Dhaka University Central Student's Union (DACSU) for two consecutive years in the late 40s. 2. He was the person who read out the memorandum in 1948 at the famous Race Course Maidan ( now known as Suhrowardy Uddan) to the then Prime Minister of Pakistan, demanding Bangla to be acknowledged as a state language of Pakistan on behalf of 75 million Bangalees. 3. He was the first person to publicly condemn the military janta in March 1971 for the mass killing of innocent Bangalees. In fact, despite pressure from the Ayub Govt., he refused to change his statement, which was published few days later. 4. He was a Member of the Executive Committee of Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM), of which Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was also a Member. My father played a key role in trying to establish a democratic government in the then Pakistan, which resulted in the general election of 1970. He was also one of the few people who demanded to General Ayub that power should be transferred to Sheikh Mujib, the elected leader of Pakistan and asked Ayub to allow Sheikh Mujib to become the Prime Minister of Pakistan. 5. As a young boy, I have witnessed my father critising the military leaders at his office in our house and demanded that they stop their harassment and torture of innocent Bangalees. 6. I also know that he was personally involved in securing the release of number of prominent Bangalees from the unjustified custody of Pakistani rulers. 7. After Mujib Govt. unlawfully cancelled his citizenship of Bangladesh in 1972, he was forced to live abroad. During his forced exile, he was offered asylum in various countries, but he refused. He remained loyal to his duty for his motherland and returned to Dhaka at the earliest possible opportunity. 8. My father has dedicated his entire life and sacrificed his career for the service of his country for nearly 60 years. He resigned his job as a College Professor in the mid 50s to serve his country. Has he not done that, he would have become a very successful and prominent academic or a civil servant and could have lived a very comfortable life. Instead, he chose a life of struggle and sacrifice. 9. Few years ago, I was in a conference in Manchester where the Guest Speaker was the honourable Imam of Masjidul Aqsa, the third most holiest place for Muslims. After the event, I went to talk to the Imam. Someone next to him introduced me to the Imam as a son of Prof. Ghulam Azam. As soon as the Imam heard that I am a son of Prof. Azam, the Imam stood up and shook my hand and told me, ''I have a lot of respect for Ustadh Ghulam Azam. He is an inspiration to us all. Please convey my salam to him when you speak to him'. This is one demonstration of how well known and well respected he is in the Islamic world. Therefore, to question the integrity of such an honourable man can only be possible by someone who does not understand the meaning of honour and service to his country. All the above facts can easily be verified if Mr. Bhuiyan takes the trouble to do so, although I suspect that he neither has the intention nor the mentality to do so. Actually, people of Bangladesh, wherever they are, should feel proud of Prof. Ghulam Azam as a son of Bangladesh. He is well known and well respected throughout the Muslim world and has made his country proud. He is also a very well respected Islamic scholar and written over 100 books on Islam, some of which have been translated in other languages. My appeal to Mr. Bhuiyan and the people like him is - please stop this vindictive propaganda. By engaging in this kind of propaganda, instead of doing any harm to Prof. Azam, you are actually lowering yourself and humiliating yourself. My request to you is, please seek the truth in a proper manner, with honesty and sincerity. I pray to Almighty Allah that he guides you and people like you to the truth. Please do not waste your time trying to undermine people of honour and truth. It will only backfire. I conclude by reminding you the verse from Holy Quran, where it says, Truth shall prevail over falsehood and falsehood will inevitably be destroyed. Wassalam.
