Sources said taking the advantage professional donors are charging up to Tk 1500 for a bag of blood which should be sold normally at around Tk 400 per bag of blood.On the other hand, blood taken from the professional donors is not always safe said a Comilla Medical College Hospital sources seeking anonymity.This year the situation has turned serious turn because of less blood collection by the voluntary organisations. Sources said usually members of different political parties and voluntary organisations usually collect blood but collection by them is not satisfactory this year due to political unrest.The campaign for save blood by local clubs, NGO, and government organisations is virtually absent now.According to sources, over 220 blood bags are needed everyday in the district but around 30 per cent of it can be met now leaving a huge shortage. The sources added that even common AB positive blood is not available now. Many child patients who come for blood transfusion have to go back regretfully. Eighteen-year-old Thalassemia patient Sazu Miah was brought to the hospital from Brahmanpara upazila. He needed O+ blood but the patient had to return disappointedly as they could not collect the blood despite desperate search for two days. Another Thalassemia patient, 11-year-old Rehena Akhter from Debedier upazila, needs blood transfusion. His father Abdur Rahim said,his condition is deteriorating at the hospital as the hemoglobin rate is dropping alarmingly.
