Satkhira is crying- Satkhira is crying for food and water- for medicine and shelter- for sympathetic and humanistic behaviors.
The demoness Aila wooing the demon tidal bore evicted many people from their ancestral habitation. The massacre- the devastation- the destruction caused by Aila beggar description. No human language, so to say, can delineate the sufferings of the Aila affected areas. The casualty went beyond imagination. It is not an exaggeration to make an opinion that Aila indeed outdid Sidr- in many considerations specially at Satkhira. Though Aila hit tremendously different district of Bangladesh and West Bengal of India, the irreparable damage done on the people and property of Satkhira has exceeded all previous records. The people affected by Aila are completely helpless. Now they are standing on water- eating on water- sleeping on water. But it is an irony of fate that they are not getting water to drink. The tragic scenario recalls the immortal lines of the great supernaturalist Coleridge:
“Water water everywhere
But nor any drop to drink”
Just like the sinned sailors of the Ship of Ancient Mariner, the ill destined people of Aila affected areas of Satkhira are to endure unimaginable, unbearable and indescribable sufferings. But what are the sins of these innocent people? Recently and remarkably, it is to be noted that the worst sufferers of Aila’s havoc are the poor people- the working class people- the day-laborers- the have-nots. Now there is the bare sky above them and polluted, impure and disease spreading saline water under their feet. At any moment the vast sky may ironically be soft enough to pour heavy rainfall to add more pains to their sufferings. The most recent danger that is very much alarming is diarrhoea which in epidemic form has began its misdeeds to carry away so many ill-fated lives. And danger doesn’t come alone; some mischievous companions have already been associated with diarrhoea to make the environment more hellish.
Furthermore, most people especially women left their collapsed houses with single dress which is by this time almost torn and out of use. So very reasonably they need sufficient garment to avoid remaining base bodied and naked. Media informed that for want of shroud, the helpless and unfortunate people floated the dead bodies of their near and dear ones on water.
The shelterless people pass their days and nights with empty stomach on the embankment in the open air amidst great uncertainty and anxiety. The students who are the future crews of their families stopped going to schools and colleges. As a whole the prevailing conditions has gone beyond normal living and the state of such condition beacons serious human-disaster.
That is why, Satkhira is crying. Satkhira is appealing to the conscience of the humane and humanistic people of home and abroad to stretch their benign hands toward the Aila affected people of Satkhira and other districts of Bangladesh. To stop heartrending cry of the Aila victims, the people of home and abroad are requested to awaken their spirit of humanity, fraternity, friendship and sympathy and to stand by the helpless, homeless, foodless, drinkless, medicineless, dressless people whore struggle for living is really heart-touching.
