Gesture Control Software Lets You Click, Type in Midair

PointGrab wants you to be able to control your computer, TV and more with simple hand gestures.
The company's website says its software enables any 2D camera — already embedded in smartphones and tablets — to read hand gestures up to five meters away. It can also differentiate between movement meant for it and an unintentional flick of the wrist.

"These days, devices are much smarter, and so we can teach them to understand human body language," Avital Rabani, PointGrab's marketing director, told Mashable in an email.
Cursers move in the direction of your hand and different gestures correspond to different commands. Make a fist, for example, and the cursor grabs an on-screen item. Make two in a row and it double-clicks. Other hand signals control everything from zoom to volume.
The company also says its software supports a virtual keyboard that lets users tap invisible letters in midair, which makes it possible to browse the Internet from a distance. So as long as your fingers match up with where the keys would be on a real keyboard, typing in midair is the same as on a desk. (Although it looks a little sillier.)
Other companies, like Flowton Technologies, have developed similar sensors to enable gesture control and voice commands for home devices like your lights and thermometer.
PointGrab already has various partnerships — with Samsung, for example — and since no hardware is required, it's easy to see how PointGrab could be integrated into devices you already own.
Would you use gesture control if your devices allowed it? Let us know in the comments.
