GitHub, the collaborative platform for coders that has more than 4 million members, has introduced Goverment GitHub, which aims to do the same for municipalities.
The site is described as "dedicated to showcasing the amazing efforts of public servants and civic hackers around the globe." Such efforts include a Canada web experience toolkit, which is described as a "shared boilerplate for all government websites" and select datasets from the city of Chicago, among other open-source initiatives.

"We've started a Government organization on GitHub so that users can connect, share best practices and learn from each other," the company explained on the site.
GitHub raised $100 million last year in first-round funding, which gave the company an estimated valuation of $750 million. GitHub charges developers $25 a month to keep their code private on the site. It also licenses a software-coding product for companies, for which it charges an annual fee of $250 per user.
