Instagram has sent out invites to multiple members of the media, including Mashable, for a mysterious press event in New York City on Dec. 12.
The invitation is particularly vague and doesn't reveal much other than the fact that Instagram CEO Kevin Systrom will be present. The media is invited to "share a moment" with the Instagram team. One could take that as a reference to a new private messaging feature, the focus of many rumors. Or one could take it to mean pretty much anything.

Rather than send the invite through email, though, Instagram sent a physical invitation through FedEx. That is an unusual move, though not unprecedented: Facebook, which owns Instagram, mailed out paper invitations for an event earlier this year that introduced Instagram Video.
The invitation includes a photo printed on a piece of blonde wood with an Instagram logo in the bottom left corner. Is Instagram considering launching some kind of print component to the photo-sharing service? Or is Systrom trying to tell us that he's about to quit to take up carpentry? It could just be a colorful diversion.
Another interesting move: Unlike the last Instagram event invite, this one makes no mention of Facebook. It's purely Instagram branded and will not take place at Facebook's headquarters.
