LAS VEGAS — Connected toy company Orbotix has launched an app-controlled robot that can fly off steep inclines and tumble onto the ground.
The futuristic-looking Sphero 2B, unveiled on Sunday at the 2014 International CES show in Las Vegas, is the next-generation version of the Sphero, a robotic ball that created buzz in 2012. Unlike its predecessor, the latest model comes with a new form factor and interchangeable parts.

"Sphero 2B was designed to take one of Sphero's best features and break it out into a new product where we could explore faster speeds, more tricks, customization and new out-side-the-track games with sensors," a company spokesperson told Mashable.
The toy syncs with Bluetooth to be controlled via an iOS or Android app. It will cost $100 when it hits the market this fall.
Similar to the original Sphero, the device is designed for open play. Third-party developers can build games and apps around the 2B. The toy also comes with pre-programmed mapping routes that can be used to navigate multi-room spaces.
"Users can also set up their own skate park or racetrack and take advantage of new software that will feature virtual land damage and leveling," the spokesperson said. "You'll be able to take the tires off for drift-style racing or set up capture-the-flag style gameplay, either bot vs. bot or multiplayer."
Although Sphero's target demographic is kids ages 8 to 14, the company once again has its sights set on robot enthusiasts and hackers.
