LAS VEGAS — Nvidia is bringing console-level gaming to mobile devices and it's doing it with 192 cores.
The company's new mobile CPU, the Tegra K1, is a 192-core mobile CPU that could transform mobile gaming.
"We have reduced the amount of time that is taken for next generation platforms to reach not just PCs, not just consoles, but mobile platforms of all kinds," said Nvidia CEO Jen-Hsun Huang.

The K1, along with the new Unreal Engine 4 will, Huang promised, bring "Next-Gen" "Photo-Real" gaming to tablets and mobile phones. "Unreal Engine is the most successful game engine of all time," said Huang, who unveiled the new mobile CPU on Sunday night at CES International, adding, "it is effectively the operating system of games.
Huang spent a significant chunk of the presentation demonstrating the power or Unreal Engine 4 running on Tegra K1, showing off a hyper-realistic, animated CGI human face and a number of live, rendered gaming environments. Together, the K1 and rendering engine created realistic materials, reflections and lighting.
"These little tiny details is what increases the production value of games," said Huang, "The attention to detail, [game developers] do it because they want to create something that is exquisite. The engine makes it possible."
According to Huang, theTegra K1 mobile CPU offers almost 3x the performance of Apple's A7 Chips.
The K1 will actually be available in two editions: a quad-core 32-bit CPU (up to 2.3 GHz) and, more importantly, a 64-bit Super Core CPU (codenamed "Denver") running at up to 2.5 GHz. This should help fast-track 64-bit mobile computing on Android devices.
Huang, by the way, had high-praise for the Android platform: "Android operating system is undoubtedly the single most disruptive force in computing in the last 20 years," he said.
The 32-bit Tegra K1 should arrive on mobile devices in the first half of this year and the 64-bit version will arrive in devices before the end of this year.
The company also introduced GameStream, G-Sync for stutter-free gaming and Tegra K1 Vehicle Computing Module to "put a super computer in your car."
