Farhad Manjoo is set to leave the Wall Street Journal after less than six months for David Pogue's vacated position as "State of the Art" columnist for the New York Times.
Manjoo confirmed the news in a post on LinkedIn in which he laid out his reasons for leaving the Journal and his broader vision for technology coverage, which referenced recent articles by Matthew Buchanan and Dave Winer.

"Though I do want to write about gadgets, I want to write about much more, too — how technology is shaping music and movies and language and cooking, how it's altering human intelligence, whether it's turning us into irretrievable narcissists (and whether that’s so bad), and also what the deal with hashtags is," Manjoo wrote in the LinkedIn post. "The Pogue departure opened up an opportunity to do this at a paper I've always wanted to work for."
A Times staff memo from business editor Dean Murphy and technology editor Suzanne Spector laid out Manjoo's new role.
"In his new role at The Times, Farhad will push 'State of the Art' beyond traditional reviews to examine the tech industry more broadly and the role technology plays across the board - what he calls 'tech's intrusion into society,'" they wrote.
Manjoo is a major hire for the Times, which has recently had trouble retaining some of its top talent. Media reporter Brian Stelter left for CNN's Reliable Sources. Nate Silver and his FiveThirtyEight blog was hired away by ESPN. Deputy editor Megan Liberman moved to take the editor in chief role of Yahoo News.
The Times may have started to plug its staff leak, but Yahoo continues to shed parts. Re/code reported Thursday night that Jai Singh, Yahoo's editor in chief, had resigned from the company.
Singh's departure comes right on the heels of the firing of Yahoo's chief operations officer, Henrique de Castro, by chief executive Marissa Mayer.
