NEW YORK — With the Super Bowl right around the corner, the NFL announced on Thursday a fully personalized video service called NFL Now that pushes out news, analysis and highlights across mobile devices.
Launching this summer, before the 2014 season starts, NFL Now is an HD video network that packages what fans wants to see. It knows if you're a Patriots fan, keeps track and gives you updates about your fantasy football players and feeds you videos you likely don't want to miss.
The service will be available for free via the NFL Now app (available for Windows, iOS and Android) and on computers at nfl.com/now. Streaming consoles such as Xbox One will also be compatible. Fans looking for premium content and features can subscribe to NFL Now Plus.
After launching the platform, fans can indicate their favorite team and the type of videos they like best. The service learns preferences over time and suggests related content (think Netflix recommendations). It also pushes out game highlights — both during and after games — as well as original library content from NFL Films and behind-the-scenes footage (such as locker room interviews) that you might not see if you're a fan out of the local market.
"This appetite for NFL news and information is borderline insatiable," said Brian Rolapp, the NFL's executive VP of media, during a press conference in New York City. "We see that more and more fans are using video, which has grown 33%, and we've seen 152% growth on mobile. Fans want it on devices they carry in their pockets."
The NFL also highlighted that 60% of mobile consumption doesn't actually come on game days — fans are accessing digital content mostly Tuesday through Saturday. Sunday and Monday only makes up 40% of the share.
