Thanks to 3D printers, the dream of creating your own gadgets and replacement parts in the home is now a reality, but most consumers still consider the printers too costly and the process overly complex. MakerBot's first compact printer, the MakerBot Replicator Mini, may change their minds.

Unveiled at CES 2014, along with an industrial-sized printer and a new Replicator pro version, the pint-sized, Wi-Fi-enabled 3D printer costs $1,375 and is now available for pre-order. It's not cheap, but still more than $1,000 less than the company's new full-sized option. According to founder and CEO Bre Pettis, the Mini will "open up the whole world of 3D printing to everyone." It offers one-touch 3D printing, without the need to calibrate or level the printer's build plate.

The printer, which is roughly half the size of the Replicator 2, has a print capacity of 3.9 L x 3.9 W x 4.9 H inches. It includes the same extruder found on the full-sized Replicator and comes with a built-in camera that lets you remotely monitor the 3D print process and share images of it on social media. All objects are printed, by default, at 200-micron layer resolution using MakerBot PLA Filament, a corn-based biodegradable plastic.

The Mini joins a growing list of affordable consumer-grade 3D printers hitting the market, including the small Cube 3D printer from 3DSystems, which lists for about $1,299.

While you can freely download 3D object designs from MakerBot's Thingiverse website, the company has also introduced PrintShop: a free, tablet-based 3D-object design app that connects directly to the 3D printer. If you have an extra $949 lying around, the company also sells a 3D digitzer called, naturally, the MakerBot Digitzer, which lets you scan in and duplicate objects from your home.

You can pre-order here, but printers won't ship until sometime in the spring.
