Fourth Person Dies Following SXSW Car Crash

DeAndre "Dre" Tatum, 18, of Fort Worth, Texas, died on Thursday from injuries sustained after a suspected drunken driver crashed through a crowd at the South by Southwest Festival in Austin earlier this month.

Tatum is the fourth person to die from the devastating incident that occurred when an intoxicated man slammed his gray Honda Civic through a street barricade and into a crowd of SXSW concertgoers while fleeing police. Jamie West, 27, Steven Craenmehr, 35, and Sandy Le, 26 are the other three victims. More than 20 people were injured.

"The news of DeAndre Tatum's passing is very sad to us @Austin_Police," Austin Police Chief Art Acevedo tweeted.

Rashad Charjuan Owens, the 21-year-old driving the Honda Civic, has been charged with murder and is being held on $3 million bond.

Tatum was taken to University Medical Center Brackenridge after the crash with a broken leg, broken pelvis and a "severe brain injury," his mother said on March 13. “These are some of the worst injuries that we see and not everybody with these kinds of injuries survives," the head of the emergency room at the hospital said at the time.

Tatum's girlfriend, 17-year-old Curtisha Davis, was also hit by the car. She survived and was released from the hospital on March 18 after suffering from a neck injury and broken bones.

She sent a series of heartbreaking tweets on Thursday after learning of Tatum's death.
