Journey to PhD

সাধারন একজন লোক, চিকিৎসা বিজ্ঞানে আগ্রহী। This article will discuss the tips for them who want to get PhD position in abroad. Very few people can pay 30000 Dollar/year as tuition; I hope this article will help them. How to prepare for a PhD scholarship depends on patience and lot of trying । If you do have a master Degree, good, if you don't, no need to worry, 4 years honours degree is also suitable to get admission in PhD in Australia. Before applying for admission, how you will prepare? If you are in 4th year or first year in masters, it’s a good time for the preparation. A good research experience and technical knowledge is essential. For example if you have the scope to learn how to operate a machine like UV-Spectrophotometer, HPLC, Atomic absorption Spectrophotometer, gel preparation and western, northern blotting, DNA, mRNA isolation, microscopy and capable of analysing the data including SPSS for statistics , learn these things very well. A 4th year student may not get all the access in BD but keep in touch with your Teacher and masters students who are doing research in your University. At least you can wash the bench top and test tube in the lab. This is the first step of doing research, if you can wash test tube very well, definitely you will be a good researcher in future But don’t forget about your GPA, 3.5 or above will satisfy and make you competent. SSC and HSC results don't have any value for Post graduate admission except in Japan (Monbukagakusho scholarship). Together with these, you have to prepare for your IELTS, TOEFL etc. A good IELTS 6.5 no band less than 6 will meet the entry criteria in most of the universities of the world. Now next step is to understand research. In BD with low financial help, it’s not possible to do very good research, but always there is a way. Read journal article very well (Materials and methods section). You will always get very useful methods to solve any problem. If you go to very good journal, you can't get the proper direction or that will not be suitable with your lab set up. Here you will find all Bangladeshi Research Journal - BanglaJOL or bangladeshjournalonline. You can also make a group with your closest friends in the same field or closely related field. Discuss the project within the group and share the tasks. This group will benefit in several ways - 1- it will reduce your work load. 2- It will give you new ideas. 3- Ultimately it will also give you the opportunity to increase the number of publication. Definitely, everyone will agree that most of the time very good research cannot be done without any good funding. You may think that your supervisor gets funding from Govt., and you will be able to do good research, it will be a day dream. It will benefit him, not you. He will buy car and you will see them riding. This is not the case that will always happen. This time you will understand how valuable the number of published paper is. (If you get a PhD scholarship, you always do have the chance to get good impact factor journal paper). These number also give a good expression to your future supervisor about your ability in doing research independently or at least give the expression that you know how to clean the lab. Write up your manuscript from your Undergraduate Project and Master’s thesis. Send it to your supervisor for correction and all other friends (Who are in author list) for their comments and thoughts. Authorship will be based on give and take way and every participant should have high degree of moral and this should also be settled with your supervisor. Usually supervisor doesn’t agree and also they don't have enough time to give these things in high priority. But any way try to convince him. Be sure also about your fellow students character. My experience is this system will work, I had a group of six members and we all came for PhD at Sydney, UQ, Griffith, Alberta and Cambridge. Now you have to decide what you want to do, on the other hand what you can do. It depends upon the availability of research project in particular School or your supervisor. Searching a supervisor is one of the difficult one. If you are lucky enough, you will get him very easily otherwise wait and see. If you are desperate you can send flowers and greeting cards, no problem at all. Now the question is why a supervisor (Principle investigator) will respond to you? Answer is they need competent student in their project. You followed the process; you have GPA, IELTS, and publication, be sure you will get the scholarship. Use internet to get the address of University/Universities, your corresponding department and academic staff member or research leader. Read the profile of the staff member or research project available that is very close to your field of interest. Direct contact with them is the best way to convince them about your potentiality. Some places may also ask to fill up an expression of interest form. Scholarship link in BD, edunetbd.com moedu.gov.bd Others naturejobs.com Best wishes and hope for the best
