'Doctor Who' Christmas Special: What We Know So Far

Still recovering from the mind-blowing, movie-length, 3D 50th Anniversary episode of Doctor Who on Saturday? You have less than a month to get over it, because everything is about to change again.
The BBC confirmed the name of the sci-fi show's crucial Christmas episode on Monday: "The Time of the Doctor," which will be broadcast around the world on Dec. 25. The corporation also tweeted the picture, above, which features the Doctor and companion Clara in pensive mood and festive attire, respectively. (That's a Christmas cracker Clara's holding, a British yuletide tradition.)

The Doctor is holding the head of a Cyberman while three figures lurk in the background: the Silence, a terrifying and recently introduced alien race that causes anyone who sees them to immediately forget they exist.

The trailer for the show, released immediately after the anniversary episode, features two more supremely scary villains, the Daleks and the Weeping Angels. It also invokes the name of the planet, Trenzalore, where the Doctor will be buried after an "endless, bitter war" at some future time.
Here's the official BBC synopsis for the episode:
Orbiting a quiet backwater planet, the massed forces of the universe’s deadliest species gather, drawn to a mysterious message that echoes out to the stars. And amongst them – the Doctor. Rescuing Clara from a family Christmas dinner, the Time Lord and his best friend must learn what this enigmatic signal means for his own fate and that of the universe.
As every Who fan knows, this will not end well for Matt Smith's Doctor. He is set to regenerate into the Twelfth Doctor (or is it the Thirteenth?), played by Peter Capaldi, at the end of the show, meaning the Doctor is going to suffer some kind of serious bodily harm.

In August, when showrunner Steven Moffat was writing the episode, he told Doctor Who Magazine that it would "tie up" a lot of loose ends from Smith's tenure.
"It’s been a long game," Moffat said. "But most of the questions that people ask will be answered.”
He also hinted that Smith's Doctor would be fully aware that his end was approaching and that much of the episode would deal with that sense of dread — all of which doesn't sound very Christmas-y, unless you're thinking about the Ghost of Christmas Future. Jenna Coleman, who plays Clara, described filming the episode as "brutal" and "traumatic."
Moffat also told the UK newspaper Daily Mirror that the Doctor has in fact run out of regenerations. As fans know, Time Lords can only regenerate 12 times, and apparently the War Doctor (John Hurt) and the pseudo-regeneration during David Tennant's era both count. So the episode will answer the question of how Smith can regenerate into Capaldi.

Moving into the realm of rumor, the entertainment news site Digital Spy reported that Orla Brady, best known to U.S. viewers as Walter Bishop's wife on Fringe, will play a central role in the episode as someone very important from the Doctor's past.
Could that be the reason why Clara was seen in the anniversary special rather pointedly looking at a picture of Susan, the Doctor's granddaughter and first companion from 1963? Only Christmas time will tell.
