Bill Gates: Don't Call Me a College Dropout

Bill Gates has earned many titles over the years — world's richest man, tech visionary and leading philanthropist — but there's one title he seems to question: college dropout.
Gates, who attended Harvard for three years, is frequently mentioned alongside other notable tech executives like Steve Jobs and Mark Zuckerberg who dropped out of school and went on to become hugely successful.
"It is strange to call me a college drop out in all but the most literal sense. I went for three years and took enough courses to graduate," Gates said during a Reddit AMA on Monday, in response to a question about the impact of higher education on his success. "So I am kind of a failure as a drop out and I don't have a degree ..."

Gates responded to more than 30 questions during the AMA about what device he uses (shocker: Microsoft Surface 2 Pro), the results of his recent condom design competition ("This is a sensitive topic") and his thoughts on bitcoin ("The foundation is involved in digital money but unlike Bitcoin it would not be anonymous digital money.")
The world's richest man also revealed his most expensive guilty pleasure — owning a plane. "Warren Buffett called his the Indefensible," Gates said, referring to Buffett's plane. "I do get to a lot of places for Foundation work I wouldn't be able to go to without it."
This isn't the first time Gates has done an AMA, but this time comes less than a week after Microsoft announced the hiring of a new CEO and the decision to move Gates out of the chairman role and into a new, more active advisory role at the company he cofounded.
He reiterated that he will spend one-third of his time now working at Microsoft and teased a couple areas that he's interested in pursuing in his new role.
"I am excited about how the cloud and new devices can help us communicate and collaborate in new ways. The OS won't just be on one device and the information won't just be files - it will be your history including being able to review memories of things like kids growing up," he wrote. "I was thrilled Satya asked me to pitch in to make sure Microsoft is ambitious with its innovation. Even in Office there is a lot more than can be done."
In response to another question about what he has been doing at Microsoft, he added: "I make sure we pick ambitious scenarios and that we have a strong architecture to deliver on them. I encourage good work (hopefully)."
However, don't expect Gates to get too involved with Xbox, one of Microsoft's more promising businesses.
"I am not a huge gamer," he wrote, in response to a question about his favorite video games. "My son knows a LOT more than I do about what is cool on Xbox."
