Jagannath University students dream of a centre of excellence

Students of English Department of Jagannath University were cutting a cake with full of excitement on 20th October, Wednesday. It seemed that they were celebrating someone’s birthday. But it was the birthday of their beloved campus in fact. On the occasion of the 5th founding anniversary of Jagannath University, students of different faculties organised several celebration with cultural programmes. In the very early of the day, students and teachers of all departments came to the campus wearing colourful dresses that added special beauty with the as usual look of the campus. Boys and male teachers wore short panjabis with jeans while female students and teachers wore colourful sharees with a flower attached with their hair. At about 9 am, all the students, teachers and staffs gathered in front of the renowned sculpture of the campus “Ekattorer Chatona”. During the gathering, all the participants wore T-shirts of their respective departments. T-shirts of different colour made a scenic view at campus. After a while, Vice Chancellor of the University Prof Dr Mesbah Uddin Ahmed joined the gathering and exchanged greetings with students and teachers. He also hoisted the national flag and university flag on the occasion. Later he led a colourful rally marking the marvelous day. The rally ended in front of the Science Faculty after parading the whole campus. Later, a discussion was held at Science Faculty premises while JnU VC Prof Dr Mesbah Uddin Ahmed, Deans of different faculties addressed on the occasion. Some senior students also took part in the discussion while they placed some demands such as hall crisis, shortage of teachers, reduction of tution fees, play ground and enlargement of the campus. JnU VC expressed his hope saying, “We are marching forward according to our master plan for the development of this university. There is a chance to get 100 crore taka from Government. It has already been passed in pre-ECNEC. We are looking for establishing second campus at Karaniganj in condition of getting 100 acres of land from Government.” After the discussion, students celebrated the occasion with great festivity at their respective departments. They cut cakes, had great fun by singing and dancing altogether while they decorated their own department premises with alpona, colourful flowers and papers. During the mirth and fun, they also shared their feelings with their friends and recalled their memories at campus. Farhaha Sharmin of English department expressed her feelings in this way. “It seems it is my own birthday and in some addition it is more than that. Though we are now facing some problems including residential and transportation facilities but hopefully we will get modern facilities soon like other universities.” Abu Bakar Siddique of Economics department dreams of his campus where will be no political violence and discrimination. He said, “There will be no violence among the students over establishing political supremacy and everyone will get his legitimate rights.” Thus the gathering with full of fun and enjoyment was continued till the departure of university bus. But the sequence of fun existed even in the bus till they got down from it. However, Jagannath College which was transformed later as Jagannath University in 2005 has a glorious history of about 150 years. It was established in the southern part of the city of Sadarghat, Dhaka near the Buriganga. At present the University has 28 departments under 4 faculties. Every department of this university follows semester system based education. 359 teachers have been providing quality education to about 25000 students in diverse field. Students and teachers of Jagannath University had a great contribution to the road of independent Bangladesh. Former teachers and students took active part in the Language Movement in 1952, the mass upsurge in 1969 and the country’s War of Liberation in 1971. The college produced tens of thousands graduates. Many of them have become famous at home and abroad. Noted among the alumni of the college are Sufi Motahar Hosen (poet), Abdul Hamid (sports organiser and sports journalist), Bhabatosh Dutta (economist), Premendra Mitra (writer and poet), AR Yusuf (Bar-at-Law, State Minister of Bangladesh in early 1980s), A KMA Rouf (artist), Anisuzzaman (educationist, researcher), and Brozen Das (swimmer, the first Indian to swim across English Channel), Dr.Dinesh Chandra Sen and many others. However, the leadership of Jagannath University is firmly determined to make this institution as a center of excellence for creating productive and enlightened citizens of Bangladesh.
