Assalamu alaykum people. There are so many festive occasions out there that are celebrated by everyone. Some of them are Christmas, St. Valentine's day, Easter, Mother's day, Father's day etc.
But we must always ask ourselves, which ones are halal to celebrate? Is it okay to celebrate any old celebtration, or are there only some that are from the Sunnah of RasulAllah?
The answer is, yes, there are only 2 celebrations in the year when we are permitted to celebrate. Those two celebrations are the two eids, Eidul Fitr and Eidul Adha.
Anas (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: "The Prophet (SAW) came to Madeenah and the people of Madeenah had, in Jaahileeyah two days for play and amusment10. So the Prophet (SAW) said: 'I came to you and you had, in Jaahileeyah two days for play and amusement. Indeed Allaah has replaced them for you by that which is better than them: The dav of Nahr (Slaughteung) and the day of Fitr (Breaking fast).'" (Saheeh. Reported by Ahmad (3/103.178.235). Aboo Daawood (1134). an Nasaa'ee (3/179) and al-Baghawee (1098). )
All the other celebtrations are bid'a (innovation) of the religion. And any innovation of the religion is not accepted and is haram to do or to promote.
The Prophet (saw) said: "I warn you of the newly invented matters (in the religion), and every newly invented matter is bid'ah, and every bid'ah is misguidance, and every misguidance is in the Hellfire." (an-Nasaa'ee)
So next time St. Valentine's day comes around, or a friend asks you to come to a celebration that is not for one of the two eids, whether they are Muslim or kafir, say 'sorry but i must reject this invite' because you do not want to get involved in haram actions that may lead to punishment in the grave or punishment in the hellfire. Our duty here on earth and our purpose for living is to worship Allah Alone.
"And I did not create the jinn and mankind except to worship Me." [Surah 51: Ayah 56]
So is it not best to follow what the Creator said for us to do and not to do? The being that created your surely knows you inside and out, much better than you could ever know yourself.
"Should He not know what He created? And He is the Most Kind and Courteous (to His slaves), All aware of everything." (Soorah al-Mulk 67:14) So follow Allah's Sunnah and the Messenger's Sunnah and you will never go wrong in this life or the next.
Ma-assalam.
