Allah’s Covenant with Adam (a.s) Barzakh is the state in which a person resides after he died. When the person is in the grave, and is awaiting his/her resurrection to be judged by Allah on the day of Yawmu Qiyyama, that person is out of time. So it does not feel as if the person is awaiting thousands or millions of years to be resurrected, rather it feels like a day or half a day as is seen in Sura Baqarah where Allah causes a man to die and resurrects him after he doubts Allah’s ability to resurrect a whole village. He (swt) caused the man to die and woke him up after a hundred years. Allah then asked him how long he had slept. The man replied saying: “...A day or a part of a day...” (Qur’an 2:259) Pre-Creation Allah has made all souls testify before they were put in to their bodies here on earth that He (swt) is the One and only God. Allah said he did this so that we would not say on the Day of Judgement: “...'We were unaware of this.’ Or in case you should say, ‘It was our ancestors who made partners [with Allah] and we were only their descendants. Will you destroy us for what those liars did?’” (Qur’an 7:172-173) This is our fitrah--that we already know Allah exists. This comes from the covenant Adam made with Allah (swt). But Adam forgot his covenant, and this is what led him astray to be tempted to eat the fruit of knowledge by Shaiton. But because of the convenant made we have imprinted upon all our souls the realisation and understanding that Allah is Our Creator and that He Alone do we worship. Our souls were created before all of Creation, but there is no concept of re-birth. Allah already knows if we will be believers, good or bad, and if we will be unbelievers, good or bad. So, Allah will put in our path that which will enhance our good actions if we are believers in Him (swt). Or if someone is a non-believer, He (swt) will be things in the person’s way to keep them in kufr. Allah knows All Things, so He (swt) can do this for the human being.
