It was a noon of October 2007. We found Sagori Dash, a five years old girl, groaning and moaning while putting her head on her mother’s lap. Her mother was trying to sooth her but in vain. We went to her and asked to know about the happenings. With tearful eyes Jhorna Dash, mother of Sagori Dash, stated “Sagori has been suffering from infection in her left eye. Recently we visited the doctor of the Govt. run medical college hospital. The doctor has said that the infection is severe and has turned to cancer. It is very urgent to uproot the infected left-eye to save the right one.” Jhorna added, “We are very poor. Sagori’s father is a barber who earns very little to live from hand to mouth. It is not possible to bear the expenditure for her surgery.” The sight touched us verymuch. We discussed the issue and decided to enroll the family to our ongoing Family Strengthening Program (FSP). This support has become a blessing for them later on. We suggested Sagori’s parents to proceed for surgery and assured them to provide support with medicine from SOS Social Center Rajshahi. Subsequently Sagori got admission into the Rajshahi Medical College Hospital on October 06, 2007 and an E-nucleation Operation was applied on her left eye. SOS Children's Village Rajshahi rendered the post operative medicine support for Sagori. Now she is cured and her right eye has been rescued. She has got admission into a school and has been studying in BABY grade. Her mother Jhorna Dash has told us that Sagori has a keen interest in her study and goes to school regularly. She added, “SOS Children's Village Rajshahi has done a great help for my family. We have admitted our two children. Only a year ago we could hardly dream to send our children to school for education. Poverty used to lash us severely. We could not manage to feed our children three times a day. Only for poverty we have sent our elder daughter Joti Dash to her maternal grand parents’ residence. Now we are trying to change our fate with the help of SOS-Bangladesh.”
