Speakers at a discussion said that the public places and transports need to be made 100 per cent smoke free to protect common people from passive smoking and to protect their heath.
MANOBIK, an anti-tobacco movement organisation, and Work For a Better Bangladesh Trust (WBB Trust) jointly organised the discussion at WBB Trust office at Dhanmondi in the city demanding all public places be 100 per cent smoking free.
Presided over by executive director of WBB Trust Saifuddin Ahmed, the discussion was addressed, among others, by deputy secretary of Law Ministry Md Mainul Kabir, deputy secretary of Health Ministry Rasheda Akter, senior assistant secretary of Establishment Ministry SM Mahbubur Rahman, senior assistant secretary of Health Ministry Aminul Ahsan, civil surgeon of Dhaka Dr Narendra Nath Deury, chairman of Save the Environment Movement (Poba) Abu Naser Khan and president of Manobik M Rafiqul Islam Milon.
The speakers said that though tobacco advertisement is banned, tobacco companies are continuing tobacco advertisement taking advantages of the weakness of the law banning smoking in public places. So tobacco advertisement has to be stopped completely by amending the law, they added.
Executive director of WBB Trust Sayed Mahbubul Alam presented a keynote paper at the discussion.
He mentioned that rights of non-smokers are being violated in the restaurants, workplaces, non-government institutions, industries and others places as these have not been incorporated as public places yet.
