Monday, October 26, 2009 Govt to plug illegal entry of Rohingyas Law enforcers asked to take steps Staff Correspondent Click This Link The home ministry yesterday directed the Bangladesh Rifles (BDR), Coastguards and the local administration in Chittagong and Cox's Bazar to take measures to prevent further illegal entry of Rohingyas into Bangladesh. The National Committee on Prevention of Smuggling at a meeting with Home Minister Sahara Khatun in chair also asked the local administration to bring the patrons of the Rohingya intruders to book. “A number of steps have been taken to stop influx of Rohingyas from Myanmar into Bangladesh” home secretary Abdus Sobhan Sikder told reporters after the meeting, held at the conference room of the home ministry. He added the divisional commissioner of Chittagong has been instructed to take proper steps in consultation with the deputy commissioner of Cox's Bazar in this regard. Sahara Khatun said if any Rohingya manages to sneak into the country and gets caught, he must be handed over to the BDR for pushing him back to Myanmar. “Measures will also be taken so that Rohingyas cannot obtain Bangladeshi passports,” she said, adding the meeting decided to take action against those who helped issuing documents to Rohingyas as Bangladesh nationals. She said from now on no passport would be issued by regional passport office without police verification, especially for the people from the areas where Rohingya people are living. In case of emergency like medical treatment, the home minister said, the passport could be issued from Dhaka passport office. On cross-border smuggling, Sahara said the meeting gave emphasise on arresting of the smuggling godfathers instead of the careers.
