Flood situation worsens
in Sylhet
Due to heavy rainfall and onrush of hilly waters the flood situation in different upozilas in Sylhet further worsened and vast low-lying areas are now under the grip of flood.
According to sources, although heavy rain has stopped from Saturday, but the flood situation worsened than past 3/4 days due to onrush of hilly waters flowing on fresh areas.
The flood-affected upozilas are Kanaighat, Zokigonj, Companigonj, Goainghat, Jointapur and Bianibazar. Thousands of people of the upozilas are suffering seriously by flood. They have been passing their days with much agony.
The river Surma and Kushiara, which flow through Sylhet, are flowing above the danger marks in three points.
The water flow at Kanaighat point in Surma is now flowing above 0.57 centimeters of the danger mark.
The vast areas of crop lands of the above mentioned upozilas are also under the grip of flood and farmers are concerned about their cultivation.
‘If the flood continues for long time, harvesting of Aous and Aman will be impossible,’ according to the agricultural experts.
The eight unions of Goainghat upozila including West Jaflang, Alirganj, Rustampur and Nandirgoan have been affected due to onrush of hilly waters. For this reason, the crop of Ropa Aman in the area has been affected seriously.
Several villages of Kanaighat upozila are now under the grip of flood and the crop lands of the upozila are affected by flood water. The affected areas are included Satbank, Dakshin Banigram, Lakshiprasad and Jhingabari.
On the other hand, land erosion of the Kanaighat upozila is now facing serious condition. The river erosion affected villages are Umagar, Brahmmangram, Chhatrapur, Gasbari, Chalitabari and Jhingabari.
