Walmart Launches Smartphone Trade-In Program

Just more than a week after Apple launched its iPhone trade-in program, Walmart is stepping into the smartphone-swap game — not only for iOS devices, but also Android phones.
Starting on Saturday, Sept. 21, Walmart will offer customers anywhere from a $50 to $300 credit toward the purchase of a new smartphone when they trade in their current device. The program will be available in more than 3,600 Walmart stores and Sam's Club locations.

The news comes on the launch day of Apple's next-generation iPhones, rumored to be the iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C budget device.
Walmart's trade-in program covers more than 100 smartphones. The company listed the potential trade-in value for a non-damaged iPhone 5 at $300 and a Samsung Galaxy S III at $172.
A customer can bring his mobile device into a participating location and show it to an employee. The retailer is partnering with CExchange, which will access the condition of the phone and offer a credit value. If the mobile user accepts the offer, that credit can be applied toward a new smartphone of his choice.
Walmart said customers can only qualify for the deal if they sign a new two-year contract from AT&T, Verizon Wireless or Sprint.
