At least one Walmart store had so much extra inventory left over after the holidays that it had to use its outdoor center for storage, according to a Vine video shot by a financial analyst.
Brian Sozzi, CEO and chief equities strategist at Belus Capital Advisors, took two Vine videos at five Walmart stores in the northeast. The first shows an outdoor center used to store surplus items, including big-screen TVs and Campbell's Soup in the wake of the holiday season.

Sozzi says outdoor centers are usually used to sell Christmas trees in November and early December, and then evergreen plants and eventually lawnmowers and garden items as the weather warms up. "This company is over-ordering," Sozzi says. "This is not a stockroom."

Target and assorted dollar stores had similar post-holiday inventory gluts, Sozzi says. However, Walmart has long been known for its efficiency. "You're surprised to see this from a Walmart," he says. Sozzi did similar post-holiday searches over the past few years but didn't find similar instances of over-ordering.
The Vine video below also showed that holiday items were still overflowing on Walmart store shelves the morning after Christmas. Sozzi says Walmart always takes down all its Christmas inventory on the morning of Dec. 26.

For Sozzi, the Vine videos prove that Walmart is out of touch with the needs of its core customers. Walmart isn't necessarily losing business to Amazon. Instead, overall Christmas spending is shrinking as Walmart moms seek to cut costs. "The Walmart mom is trying to figure out how to use the stuff from last year instead of buying new wrapping paper," he says.
Not everyone is receptive to Sozzi's argument. Walmart's stock is up 15% over the last year. Nevertheless, the company has posted three consecutive quarters of same-store declines — a key retail metric — over the past year.
