i am now a blogger, and post from my personal point of view on the extremist view issue, but you can feel quite sure that i represent the blog team well too. before reading more, i may state that i hate fundamentalism and brainwashing of young minds as much as all people protesting against this. we don´t want to promote extremism, not at all, rather we want to promote free speach. i can easily understand your sentiments, and we do not want this place to be "hijacked" by evil forces, to use strong words. the only concern we have is how do we solve this in a clean way, without violating our first core value of "inclusiveness". thus my personal view is not to exclude people due to their personal opinions and beliefs, rather to work on the limits of improper writings and contents.
when we started this blog, our intension was to grow it as an open platform where everyone may have their say. we wanted it to represent the society as we find it out there with all the views and opinions that people have. when i worked in grameenphone and mobile network was rolled out from ´97, we saw that the police had strong opinions against the increase in mobile phones, because it would help the criminals to communicate. true, but it has also helped the police to communicate. the same arguments would go for building better roads. it gives the criminals better chance to escape and run fast, but also the police...
should we not build roads then? should we not roll out mobile phone network? i dont want to provoke, just work out good ways where people can get a chance to argue for their views (in a non-offensive way), with an equal opportunity for an unlimited number of people to counter their arguments and seed good thoughts and promote what they see as right. policing is necessary when evil forces are out there, among those is the moderation issue. so we have to work on the rules and limitations for what we see as extremism and improper content.
moderating peoples opinion on the blog is in one way wrong - not moderating peoples opinion on the blog is also wrong...
though i have my strong personal views, my own political opinion and religious belief, i must also be open for other views and people who really believe the world should be different. debates kept within the law of the land, and opinions that could also be printed in public media should also be allowed here. but i also see the role of the blog as a place with higher ceiling and larger space that traditional media. there has been discussions on religion that other media probably wouldn´t have printed. there has been discussions on sexuality and other taboo areas that has been good, but wouldn´t have been possible elsewhere. foul language, ridiculing people, objectionable content and very provocative writings, among them religious fundamentalism, should also in our eyes be moderated/policed.
the idea of separating out politics to a separate area is because this subject bores many good people, while other groups find that very attractive. similarly, we may have the option to keep some of the very controversial posts (not all, not those who clearly violates our rules), may be kept in a separate place. we are not sure yet, just sharing some of our ideas.
i am sorry to be exclusive to many of you for writing english, but english is the only language i can use to express my personal thoughts. the blog team will communicate our common thoughts through notice board, in bangla. i understand that my views will thus not be readable by all. i wish i could engage myself more in all the good posts in bangla, but its beyond my capacity, sorry for that.
be with us, and help us with your feedback to clean up this beautiful and very resourceful community. we all want somewhere in… blog to be respected, not disgraced. good things coming.
