During Sunday night's huge NFL win over the visiting San Francisco 49ers, Seattle Seahawks fans broke the record for the loudest crowd in sports history. Then they broke it again.
Fittingly enough for a digital age in which some fans spend as much time staring at their phones as they do the field, the feat was organized largely through Facebook, and announced to the world on Twitter.

Check out footage of rabid Seahawks fans at Sunday's game in the video, above, which comes via The Seattle Times. Fans reached 131.9 decibels during the game's first quarter to set a new world record, then bested that mark with an incredible 136.6 decibels in the third quarter, Guinness World Records judge Phil Robertson told Seattlepi.com.
Set by a Turkish soccer crowd in 2011, the previous record was 131.76 decibels.
For context, a public-health project called "Dangerous Decibels" reports that the sound a jet plane makes from 100 feet away clocks in at 135 decibels. The site also says the "maximum permissible exposure time" to a sound of 115 decibels without sustaining hearing damage is about 30 seconds. It doesn't list maximum exposure times for anything louder.
The successful world-record attempt was organized largely through Volume 12, a Seahawks supporters' group that used its Facebook page to rally fans. Last week, the fan club shared this post showing Robertson preparing to measure the attempt:

Former Seahawks player and current Volume 12 organizer Joe Tafoya tweeted during Sunday night's game that the record had been broken:
Congratulations Seahawks 12th man & Centurylink field! We are officially the loudest stadium in the world!

On Monday morning, Guinness confirmed the new sports-noise record of 136.6 decibels in a tweet of its own:
Congrats to the @Seahawks who hit 136.6 dbA for "largest crowd roar at a sports stadium" record on #MNF last night in a 29-3 win over @49ers

So, if you're keeping scoring from home, there are two main takeaways from this post. First, Seahawks have amazing fans. Second, if you ever go to a game in Seattle, be sure to bring some earplugs.
