Tesco Unveils 7-Inch Hudl Tablet in the UK

UK retail chain Tesco has launched its own 7-inch tablet called the Hudl.
Retailing for £119 ($191), the Hudl has a 7-inch, 1,440x900 pixel screen, a quad-core 1.5GHz processor, 16GB of storage (expandable via a microSD memory card), Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and a battery that — according to Tesco — lasts nine hours.

The device, which comes with stock Android 4.2.2, is quite a bit cheaper than Amazon's Kindle Fire HD, which retails for £159 ($255) in the UK and Google's Nexus 7, which retails for £199 ($320) in the UK. However, these two devices offer more advanced hardware than the Hudl. Amazon's non-HD Kindle Fire, which comes with only 8GB of memory, costs £99 ($159) in the UK.
It's not hard to understand Tesco's reasoning for entering the cheap tablet market: The company wants to give its customers another way to shop at Tesco.
"We feel the time is right for Tesco to help widen tablet ownership and bring the fun, convenience and excitement of tablets to even more customers across the UK," said Tesco CEO Philip Clarke in a written statement.
Tesco's Hudl comes in four colors — black, blue, red and purple — and will be available in Tesco stores and online Sept. 30.
