A suicide bomber attacked a train station in Russia on Sunday, killing at least 14 people, according to multiple reports.
The blast occurred in Volgograd, the city formerly known as Stalingrad, which is about 550 miles south of Moscow and 430 miles northeast of Sochi, where the 2014 Winter Olympic games are scheduled to take place in February. Both Reuters and the Associated Press said the bomber was female. The AP has reported the death toll as 16, including the bomber.

A spokesperson for Russia's Ministry of Health said 42 people were left wounded, according to Reuters. Authorities said they believe the death and injury toll would have been higher if a police officer had not approached the bomber before she reached the station's waiting hall.
Volgograd is a city of around 1 million, and it lies near Russia's tumultuous North Caucasus region, a group of provinces that includes Chechnya and Dagestan.
Russia has previously pledged to make the upcoming Sochi games "the safest Olympics in history." The city is also scheduled to be one of 11 to host matches for the 2018 World Cup.
