Some 3 million people pledged a cumulative $480 million for Kickstarter projects in 2013, a 50% jump over the amount pledged in 2012, according to the company, though there were few breakout hits.

Significantly, these three projects were funded in 2012, not 2013. Each went on to receive more traditional funding from established venture capital firms. The emphasis on the three underscores the fact that Kickstarter didn't have a breakaway tech hit in 2013. The platform's highest-profile venture was the crowdfunding of the Veronica Mars Movie Project, which raised $5.7 million.
The rest of the top-funded projects in 2013 were entertainment ones. That included $3.1 million for Wish I Was Here, a project led by Zach Braff (pictured). Computer role-playing games, led by inXile Entertainment's Torment: Tides of Numera, which received $4.2 million in funding, also were among some of the most-funded projects for the year. Gaming was also the biggest category in 2012, raising a total of $83 million. The No. 2 category was film and video, which raised $58 million.
Kickstarter didn't offer a similar breakdown this year. Reps from the company could not be reached for comment.
