The first monster viral video of 2014 has landed and it stars the most frightening baby on the planet: Devil Baby. The video, which depicts an animatronic Devil Baby scaring the wits out of unsuspecting New Yorkers has, after just a few days, well over 25 million views.
The tale of how the small digital agency Thinkmodo created the viral sensation, which is really an ad for the new 20th Century Fox film Devil’s Due, is now well known. However, how the special effects team actually created the prank is not — until now.
Above we have an exclusive video from the special effects team that built Devil Baby and what follows are some little known fun facts about the animatronic nightmare’s creation. (The original Devil Baby video is below.)
It took four weeks to build Devil Baby and its stroller. Thinkmodo estimated that was about 200 hours.
It was a robot: Inside the Devil Baby’s fiberglass body were 11 servo motors.
The realistic-looking skin was made of silicon.
Devil Baby’s hair came from a goat and each strand was individually punched into the "skin" on the skull.
The “sweat” came courtesy of “KY Jelly”
An airbrush artist created the disturbingly visible veins on Devil Baby's skin.
The stroller motors were actually from two Dewalt electric drills. Max speed? 2mph.
Devil Baby had a bad habit of projectile vomiting. That vomit was made of water, a thickening agent, and food coloring.
It took four puppeteers to operate Devil Baby.
Puppeteers used R/C model airplane controls for the baby and stroller.
Devil Baby's cries and other sounds came courtesy of an iPod connected to a transmitter that sent signals to the speakers hidden in the stroller.
It wasn't all smooth sailing in Devil Baby world.
Initially, the projectile vomit projected too far and actually hit one of the cameramen.
The drive belt on Devil Baby's stroller broke when it hit a deep pothole.
They shot the video during the now infamous "Polar Vortex." It go so cold that the motors controlling Devil Baby's eyes froze and it couldn't blink until they blasted it with a hair drier.
