AUSTIN, Texas — Astrophysicist and Internet superhero Neil deGrasse Tyson laid on a science-based smack down at SXSWi Saturday.
Tyson participated in a lively keynote with Scientific American editor Christie Nicholson titled simply "A Conversation with Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson." The live event filled up fast, sending overflow crowds into a packed ballroom at the Austin Convention Center to hear Tyson's ever-articulate thoughts on the exploration of our universe, scientific curiosity and why dinosaurs never went to space.

The keynote highlighted Tyson's ability to make science more accessible, using stories to explain his points. When relaying the importance of skepticism and observation, Tyson shared a story of his daughter's investigation into the reality of the tooth fairy.
And while such storytelling helped soften the edges of hard science, Tyson had no intention of padding his thoughts on Pluto. He has denied being solely responsible for the space rock's demotion from planet to dwarf planet, but Tyson still has little sympathy for anyone still angry about its exit from the pantheon.

Tyson's appearance at SXSW coincided with the reboot of Cosmos, a television series that first debuted with Carl Sagan as host in 1980. The new version of show, with Tyson serving as host, will premiere in 170 countries and 45 languages for the largest television rollout in history.
Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey debuts Sunday at 9 p.m. EST on FOX and National Geographic Channel. To get you pumped for the return of Cosmos (and science, in general), we gathered 10 quotes from Tyson's SXSWi keynote.
