Rapper Tyler, the Creator, Charged With Inciting SXSW Riot

AUSTIN, Texas — Rapper Tyler, the Creator, of the hip-hop collective Odd Future was arrested this weekend at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport for a misdemeanor charge of inciting a riot earlier in the week during a South by Southwest concert.
The Austin Police Department took the 23-year-old artist, born Tyler Gregory Okonma, into custody Saturday and released him on a $25,000 bond. He played a sold-out show in Dallas later that day.
The riot charge spawned from a raucous incident at his Thursday show at the Austin venue Scoot Inn. Okonma reportedly encouraged fans waiting in line to forcibly enter the concert venue despite employees at the door telling everyone to stay put because the venue was filled to capacity.
"All you outside the gates; y'all push through," Okonma yelled, according to the APD's arrest affidavit. "Y'all push through. Get in, come on."

Okonma apologized after seeing the crowd push through staff at the door, the affidavit stated, and he cursed at the employees upon leaving the stage. A bartender reportedly prevented a woman from getting trampled during the melee that ensued.
The arrest report described the ruckus caused by Okonma's actions:
Officers stated after the 'riot' dispersed, they made contact with a bartender who is an employee of the Scoot Inn and he was identified as Mylan, Thomas. Officers stated Thomas made a statement to them that during the 'riot he held several people back so one girl who fell to the ground would not get trampled.
Officers stated Thomas then told them that while he was trying to protect the girls who fell he was punched by an unknown male subject to the left side of his face which caused him pain. Officers stated they could not locate the suspect due to the large amount of people at the establishment. Officer Perez and O’Farrell stated they called for more officers to respond to the scene and that is when the crowd dispersed.
The bartender was also "punched to the left side of his face which caused him pain."
Okonma was charged with a riot, a class-A misdemeanor, due of the incident and subsequent assault with injury to the bartender. Without the assault, the riot would have been classified as a class-B misdemeanor.
The APD released Okonma's mugshot alongside statement saying, "regardless of the size of a crowd, the encouragement of unruly and unlawful behavior is against the law and cannot be tolerated."
