iTunes Radio Launches With iOS 7 on Sept. 18

Apple continues to tease its forthcoming streaming music service, iTunes Radio, which the company introduced in June. On Tuesday during its iPhone event, Apple announced the service will launch when iOS 7 becomes available on Sept. 18. The service has been touted as a "Pandora killer," though Pandora strongly disagrees.

iTunes Radio is free with no ads for users of iTunes Match, which costs $24.99 for a year's subscription. It's also free with ads for non-iTunes Match subscribers. iTunes Radio will work on iOS devices (iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch and Apple TV) and iTunes on Mac and PC.

Similar to Pandora, iTunes Radio lets listeners create custom radio stations based on songs and artists as well as discover music through featured stations like genres. Pandora is free with ads, too, and costs $36 per year ($3.99 per month) for the ad-free experience. Pandora is accessible on the web, iOS, Android, Windows Phone and BlackBerry users as well as part of 1,000 integrations in automobiles and consumer electronics.

"Apple’s new feature is an evolution of their iTunes offering to bring it on par with other streaming music services that have added radio into their feature sets," Amanda Livingood, a senior corporate communications manager at Pandora, told us in June.
