At least 10 people wereinjured in a clashes between rival groups of main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party backed Jatiyatabadi Chattra Dal over formation of new committeesat Ashulia upazila,a northern suburb of Dhaka on Friday night, witnesses said. The clashes were triggered off when a victory procession led by Asaduzzaman Mohan, new convener of local JCD came face to face with another procession, led by Abdul Malek, president of the rival faction near Palli Biddyut office. Witnesses reported that gun fire and explosions of home-made bombs were heard during the hour-long clash with the rivals using sharp weapons chased each other. Among the injured, Khairul Alam was admitted to Gonoshathya Hospital in a critical condition. BNP sources claimed that the trouble had started brewing since Rashedul Islam Rashed , a central assistant secretary, reportedly formed three new committees of Savar Upazila,Ashulia Upazila and Savar University College units without consulting the local leaders and workers on Thursday night. But Rashed, a nephew of Aman Ullah Aman, joint secretary general of BNP and a former state minister, reportedly forced the Dhaka district president and secretary to approve the committee formed by him , sources closed toRashed said. It infuriated most of thelocal JCD activists, who vowed to resist what they described as 'pocket committee' of Rashed, while demanding the formation of local committees in a democratic manner, the sourcessaid. BNP insiders said, Rashedul Islam Ritu, a regula rmaster's student of the management department of Savar University College, favoured by all sides was chosen as the convener of the college unit because of his clean image. He also received support fromthe local BNP rank and file. But trouble began when Hasibul Islam Khan, ex president of the college unit reportedly misguided the Dhakadistrict JCD leaders and convinced them to declare, Imdadul Haque Babu,allegedly a married man in his thirtiesas well as a contractor by profession, as convener of the university college. Hewas not a student of the college, alleged Ritu. Both Rashed and Hasibul repeatedly claimed that Babu was a first year honours student in the political science department of the Savar varsity college.But they reportedly failed to produce any evidence in support of Babu's genuine studentship. On investigation it was found that Babu had recently been enrolled into the irregular HSC programme of the Open University. His card number is09-011-815-288. Meanwhile, another group loyal to former local BNP lawmaker Dr Dewan Salauddin Babu, formed three separate rival committees at an emergency meeting on Fridaynight. JCD central president SultanSalauddin Tuku, General Secretary Amirul Islam Alim and Oranizing Secretary Khokon on Friday told The Independent atthe BNP head office at Nayapaltan that they had on a number of occasions had asked local JCD leaders not to form any new committee before the Eid-ul-Fitr. But it was ignored, ignitingthe clashes,Tuku said.
