Our Statement Regarding the Enlisting of Bangladesh Islami Chhatrashibir as terrorist Organization Bangladesh Islami Chhatrashibir, being the largest and most structured student organization shows its deep concern on the enlisting of BICS as a terrorist organization on the National Consortium for the Study of Terrorism and Response to Terrorism (START) which is a center of the U.S Department of Homeland security based at the University of Maryland. Bangladesh Islami Chhatrashibir appreciates the initiative of START in revealing the true visage of terrorism and reviewing its impact on society through extensive research work. In this context, we believe, it is very important to be extremely cautious in dealing with the research data and publishing them. But the given work is surprisingly in short of proper study that has put its credibility into question. We would like to draw your attention on the following issues regarding the enlisting of BICS in START’s Terrorist profile: • Bangladesh Islami Chhatrashibir was formed on February 6, 1977 in Dhaka University. The citation of date formed is entirely false. • BICS has a complete database of its human resource. The claim of having ‘unknown number of members’ only shows the weakness of study. • The financial source of BICS is clearly stated in the article no 36 of its Constitution which is widely available as printed format. The source stated in START’s database is entirely a fiction. • BICS strongly denies the claim to be the student wing of Bangladesh Jamaat-E-Islami. Both organizations have their own constitution and both independently follow the relevant constitution. • It is quite surprising that BICS is stated as ‘extremely militant and has been linked to numerous acts of violence over the year’ without any proper justification. The absence of even one valid example threatens the credibility of the database. • Shibir has always been a victim of terrorism and anarchy. 135 Shibir leaders and activists were killed by the opponent organizations while almost in all cases the killers were backed by state run mechanism. So we would like START to re-consider its stance regarding Shibir’s terrorist activities. • We hereby strongly deny, as denied earlier, any accusations regarding general terrorism without any valid proof. • Many officials and news sources allege that the group is nothing more than a recruiting ground for Bangladeshi terrorist groups such as Harakat ul-Jihad-i-Islami and Jamatul Mujahedin- How could some mere allegation be taken as reference to draw a conclusion? BICS, with its vision “promise to groom up citizens- Honest, skilled and patriot to build a better Bangladesh” is marching forward with the dedication and passion to bring a new Bangladesh. The large number of students joining Shibir each year is the sheer proof of Shibir’s acceptability among youth in Bangladesh. Shibir has its work procedure and constitution well structured and well maintained. It is happened to be the only one student organization in Bangladesh that elects its leader each year through a true democratic system of voting while any form of publicity to influence the decision making is banned by its constitution.
