Explore Feudal Japan in Pop-Up Book-Inspired Video Game

Pop-up books were magical when we were children. Each page introduced a whole new world, and they explored the third dimension before movies or video games ever popped out of the screen.
Now indie studio Nyamyam Games captures that magic with its upcoming adventure game Tengami, which takes players on a journey through feudal Japan.

Tengami simulates the art of pop-up books with its gameplay. Players must pull on edges of the world to progress the story and solve puzzles. Much of the gameplay involves pulling on tabs to alter the landscape to allow your samurai character to pass through.
Nyamyam's cofounder Jennifer Schneidereit said the creators want players to enjoy the game before bed as a contemplative experience. You'll explore rich, vivid environments with traditional Japanese imagery. In the sections playable at PAX, I led the samurai through oceanside cliffs and Japanese temples.
Tengami is out later this year for iOS and then will be headed to Wii U, Windows and Mac. You can watch the trailer above to get a sense of how magical it looks.
