Obama Enrolls in Obamacare Ahead of Looming Deadline

President Barack Obama didn't go for the gold. He selected the bronze instead.
To promote his signature legislation the Affordable Care Act, perhaps more commonly known as Obamacare, Obama signed up for a bronze-level health insurance plan over the weekend, using the online marketplace for the District of Columbia. The White House, in an emailed statement to reporters, described it as a "symbolic" gesture, since the president's healthcare is already provided by the military.

The statement said Obama "was pleased to participate in a plan as a show of support for these marketplaces which are providing quality, affordable health care options to more than a million people."
Obama registered while vacationing with his family in Hawaii. The timing of his enrollment comes just ahead of a key deadline: Those wishing to receive coverage on Jan. 1, the first possible day Obamacare plans can begin, must register by Tuesday at 11:59 p.m. ET.
The deadline previously stood as Monday at 11:59 p.m., but the administration has quietly delayed it by 24 hours, the Washington Post reported.
People who purchase insurance through Obamacare can select between bronze, silver, gold and platinum level plans. Bronze plans, like the one Obama selected, generally have lower monthly premiums but higher deductibles.
Obama has consistently stressed that the new law should not affect the majority of Americans — 85%, according to the White House — who already have healthcare. The law does, however, require most Americans to have some form of healthcare during 2014. Aside from those who qualify for an exemption, the penalty for an individual who does not have insurance is $95 or 1% of the person's yearly income (whichever is greater).
The open enrollment period for Obamacare insurance plans lasts until March 31.
