The 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray was named Car of the Year at the Northern American International Auto Show in Detroit on Monday, shining the spotlight on the redesigned iconic vehicle just one year after it launched.
The awards ceremony, which kicked off the show, was a double hitter for Chevy, which took home the top prize for North American Truck of the Year with its revamped Silverado.
Chevrolet's parent company General Motors is no stranger to the top title: The Cadillac ATS won the honor last year.
The seventh-generation Corvette Stingray — starting at $51,999 — can go from zero to 60 mph in just 3.8 seconds. It's more powerful than its predecessors with a 460-horsepower, 6.2-liter V-8 engine (front engine, rear-wheel drive) and is designed with an electronic convertible top that can be raised or lowered while the car is traveling up to 30 mph. The first version of the Corvette Stingray, which was originally spelled "Sting Ray," debuted in 1963.
Chevrolet is also bringing 4G LTE to its OnStar infotainment system, giving users quicker access to the mobile hub's apps and services than over 3G connections, the company announced last week at the 2014 International CES show in Las Vegas. The new systems will also come with a built-in Wi-Fi hotspot, so passengers can get share the data connection with smartphones, laptops and tablets. The LTE speeds will be also included in a variety of 2015 Chevrolet models including the Corvette and the Silverado.
The 2015 Corvette Stingray also comes with a performance data recorder, which captures high-definition video of what it's like to drive the vehicle. That footage can later be analyzed to improve driving and lap times and also be shared on social media.
