Protests Persist in Venezuela: 24 Photos From the Conflict

Protests have been sweeping Venezuela for more than a week, with student groups, backed by opposition leaders, demanding more security against violent crime and a regime change.
Localized protests began in the western states of Tachira and Merida in early February, which ended up with student arrests. The protesters then called for demonstrations in the capital, Caracas, demanding that the 14 detained students be liberated. Peaceful demonstration on Feb. 12 took a violent turn with clashes between protesters and police deployed by President Nicolas Maduro's government. Three people were killed as a result, and two more have died since.

The protests show no sign of slowing down, even after one of the opposition leaders, Lopez, turned himself in to the authorities. The Venezuelan government has accused him of being responsible for the deadly protests of Feb. 12, and he has been charged with murder and terrorism.
