A new trailer for Sal, the James Franco-directed independent film about A Rebel Without a Cause movie star Sal Mineo, gives us a glimpse into the final hours of one of Hollywood's first openly gay mainstream actors.
Sal will arrive via video-on-demand and iTunes on Oct. 22, followed by a limited theatrical release on Nov. 1. Franco co-stars in the film as the famous director and acting coach Milton Katselas, while Val Lauren will play the biopic's namesake.

Mineo was a star In the late 1950s and early '60s, having been nominated for multiple Oscars. His fame faded over time, and in 1976, a supposedly random stabbing ended his life.
Sal, which premiered at the 2011 Venice Film Festival, is Franco's third independent movie to be released this year. His adaptation of William Faulkner's As I Lay Dying will also release through video-on-demand later this month, and his film based on Cormac McCarthy's Child of God premiered earlier this year at the Toronto Film Festival.
