Uber announced "surge drop," a new feature meant to help its users find cheaper rides, on Monday.
The feature, which notifies users when lower rates are available, will be rolling out to iOS users this week in an update.

With surge drop, Uber users can enable push alerts that will notify them when surge pricing ends and a lower fare becomes available.
"In addition to seeing clear information about surge pricing in the app, you’ll be able to wait it out for a cheaper ride and get notified if surge ends," said the company in a blog post explaining the changes.
To take advantage of the feature, users simply select "notify me if surge ends," and enable push notifications within the app. Then, if surge pricing ends within a 30 minute window, those users will receive a push notification alerting them the fares have decreased.

The changes, first hinted at by Uber CEO Travis Kalanick last week during San Francisco's Launch festival, are rolling out to iPhone users in "most cities" by the end of the week. The company did not say when surge drop would be available to Android users.
Uber first launched its surge pricing, which sets higher fares during peak times, in 2011. It is not the only ride sharing service to have variable pricing. Lyft has a similar system in place, called "Prime Time Tips," which tacks on an extra tip for drivers during the busiest times.
