Hasina gives clear poll decision Wednesday as Jalil hints at boycott
Sheikh Hasina is set to spell out a clear poll decision from a midday press conference at Dhaka Sheraton Hotel Wednesday, with Awami League general secretary Abdul Jalil clearly hinting at a poll boycott . Jalil gave the indication after a late Tuesday night meeting with leaders of the Jatiya Party, LDP and Left allies at his home. Jalil said it was impossible for the mega-alliance to go to the polls in the present context after the meeting, the third on Tuesday in the build-up to Hasina's crucial public statement to clear the fog of a poll decision. Earlier, AL leader Obaidul Quader told reporters after two meetings of the party presidium and 14-party allies at the AL's Dhanmondi office that Hasina would address the press by 12 noon. The announcement came amid growing fears of poll boycott by the Awami League and its allies. "People will resist the election without a proper voter list and under the present Election Commission," the AL joint general secretary said.
