Animated Google Doodle Honors Computer Pioneer Grace Hopper

Today's Google Doodle is an animated tribute to computer scientist and United States Navy Rear Admiral Grace Hopper, who was born on Dec. 9, 1906 in New York City.
Hopper is best known for being one of the designers of COBOL, one of the first modern programming languages, which was created in 1959 during the Conference on Data Systems Languages.

COBOL is still in use today, especially by government and military agencies as well as banks.

Hopper also pioneered the implementation of standards for computer systems, including programming languages FORTRAN and COBOL.
From 1969 to 1977, Hopper was the director of the Navy Programming Languages Group in the Navy's Office of Information Systems Planning.
Hopper died on Jan. 1, 1992 and was interred with full military honors in Arlington National Cemetery.
The Doodle depicts her working at a huge mainframe, computing her own age, which would today be 107.
