প্রবাসী A couple of days back I had been talking to Emad Ismail , an Egyptian by birth but now an immigrant in Canada. In response to my query when will the atrocity in Gaza will end, Emad replied “It will never end” . The reason he explained is that none of the parties there is ready to accept presence of the other. The war between the Hamas and Israel has entered the 7th day today. By now the official death toll of the Palestinians in Gaza has exceeded 100, but the unofficial figure will far exceed the official figure mark and many more had sustained fatal injuries. Most of the people killed there are Civilians, children and women. Israel withdrew its force in 2005 but continues to control sea and air access to Gaza. Also the land Boundary around Gaza is surrounded by heavily guarded barbed wire and concrete fences. So Gaza is practically an isolated piece of land and depends on foreign humanitarian aid for survival. Most of its 1.7 Million people are displaced Palestinian refugees. The Gaza Palestinians can work in Israel but the access route to Israel is often closed down by the Israelites. High population growth rate coupled with limited resources has rendered Gaza far more impoverished than its mighty neighbour . Hamas in Gaza was established with the same ideology of the Islamic brotherhood of Egypt. They came to power in 2007. Egyptian president Ahmed Mursi is actively mediating a ceasefire between the two factions. However both of them set conditions for the ceasefire. The Hamas demands an end of blockade and the Israel demands that they Hamas should stop firing rockets to Israel. Sooner a ceasefire is reached there, it is better for the people of the region, but so far no end of the conflict is in sight. We hope that both parties will agree to a ceasefire soon and the loss of people and property will stop.
