Addressing a discussion and an iftar party as the chief guest at a hotel in the capital, he criticised the Government’s move to amend the Constitution. “We have proper respect, patience and tolerance for the Constitution in the interest of democracy. Democracy runs through respect and patience,” he said. He stressed the need for unity among the nationalist and Islamic forces to protect the democracy and the Constitution from the hands of the Government. Meanwhile, BNP Standing Committee member Goyeshwar Chandra Roy said, “If anybody says anything against Allah, he may be pardoned.” Addressing the programme as a special guest, he further commented that there was no necessity of the parliament if the court resolves everything. Bangladesh Jatiya Party organised the discussion on ‘Sovereignty, Democracy and Constitution’ and the party with Chairman of the party and former deputy prime minister Prof Dr MA Matin in the chair. In his speech, former DU Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Emajuddin Ahmed called upon all to resist the present Government’s undemocratic and autocratic behaviour to protect the country. On the other hand, JSD Presdent ASM Rab criticised the Government’s different moves and said the parliament waies not safe in the hands of AL-led ruling party. If court takes the decision on everything, there was no need of the parliament, he commented. General Secretary of the party Abu Naser Mohammad Rahmatullah delivered the welcome speech while it was addressed, among others, by opposition chief whip Joynul Abedin Faruk MP, NDP Chairman Khandaker Gulam Mortuza, NPP Acting Chairman Khalekuzzan Khan Dudu, NAP Chairman Jebel Rahman Gani, General Secretary of Muslim League Atikul Islam, the party leaders Advocate Amaatun Nur Panna, Md Ilias and Mollah Omar Faruk.
